Express Spa Treatments

Every month the International Spa Association conducts a survey to hundreds of spa owners, managers, and industry professionals worldwide. Back in June 2009, respondents commonly cited that they have added or expanded 30-minute or "express" treatments offerings to help meet consumer demands. In fact 86% of all ISPA members offer a 30-minute (or less) treatment on their spa menu. When comparing to the same period in 2008, 46% of respondents experienced an increase in the number of shorter treatment bookings.

Today, everything is faster. Text messaging, drive-through dining, twitter, DVR, the list goes on. I have a hard time reading an entire email anymore, mostly skimming through and getting the main points. Time is one of the most precious resources today and there is not enough of it. Creating an express treatment at your spa may be the thing you need to push your spa through the difficult economy or to push you over the top. Find ways to market your express treatment to quick moving, busy people. Market yourself on Twitter. Talk to Human Resource managers at companies looking for fringe employee benefits. Sit down for a half hour and make a list of individuals or companies you know who love spa treatments, but lack the time to spend on a one or two hour treatment at your spa. These people are busy, so send them a quick email or note letting them know you are thinking of their time and have a service that might work for them.

2011 ISPA Conference Follow-up

Salt of the Earth just finished our first ISPA Expo Conference with our new brand and it was a success! We were able to meet so many influential experts in the spa industry and catch up with some good, old, friends. After the normal tradeshow stress and booth shipping drama, we were able to display our Blend Bar, retail, and professional products effectively. We had MANY compliments on our booth all thanks to the mastermind - Paul Heslop - and his out-of-the-box thinking in every aspect!
We were so excited to meet and make custom products for many spa directors including our wonderful friends at the amazing Red Door Spas.
ISPA had some incredible speakers at the General Sessions including Bert Jacobs at Life is Good, Faith Popcorn, and Tony Hseih at Zappos! They each have unbelievable success stories.
The charity auction at the end of the Conference was a lot of fun and ISPA was able to raise a significant amount of money. Salt of the Earth was competitively bidding on a trip to Las Vegas at the Bellagio including amazing spa treatments but at the last second someone outbid us :(

2011 ISPA Conference & Expo

Salt of the Earth is getting fired up for the upcoming ISPA Conference & Expo at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas. This will be our second year attending this colossal trade show. Salt of the Earth headquarters has the atmosphere of how I imagine the North Pole feels two weeks before Christmas! Everyone is working hard to make ISPA epic. This show is going to be our biggest yet with our new, innovative products to show off to the top industry leaders. Salt of the Earth will be demonstrating the genius Blend Bar concept and, for the first time ever, showing the new, travel-size Whipped Body Creme tube! Stay at Stein Eriksen Lodge

We all could use a "GNO" every once in awhile, whether it be a "guys night out" or a "girls night out." Luckily Salt of the Earth was able to pull some strings with the beautiful Stein Eriksen Lodge in Park City, UT for a much needed GIRLS night out! The beneficiaries of the amazing hook ups were Laura Heslop, the carer of the "Chief Care Officer" (Paul Heslop), also known as the wife, and friends. First off, the drive up to the Lodge was stunning as the mountain leaves had just started to change colors for the fall season. As we arrived to the magnificent entrance, all of the Stein Eriksen staff were so accommodating to us three girls who were slightly out of our element! Even so, they were very respectful and made us feel exceptional. The grounds are beautifully lined with trails winding through trees and flowers giving it that mountainous feel as we walked to our room.


And the room was amazing! It was a shame that life would only allow a one night stay because it was the kind of place you could spend forever. On our arrival, there was a surprising turn-down service complete with comfy robes and slippers.


The Spa at Stein Eriksen Lodge is sensational. We girls were regretting not spending the entire morning their before our pedicure treatments. The spa staff was very professional but in an inviting kind of way. We were lucky to make it to the spa early enough to enjoy the meditation area and spa bath.



Our pedicures started out with the choice of six different Salt of the Earth scents. Loving the cranberry tones in the cosmopolitan scent, we all chose it for our pedi products. It is the perfect scent to get us into the Fall spirit! The nail technicians then hand-mixed the cosmo scent oil into Salt of the Earth's Salt Glow Scrub and Whipped Body Creme. After a warm soak and buffering of our worn feet, the therapists used the freshly mixed Salt Glow Scrub to exfoliate any remaining, unwanted skin. The grapeseed oil, being the base of the scrub, rejuvenated our new, smooth skin. Combined with the cosmo scent, it could easily be one of my favorite products - yum! Then, we received a melting leg massage with the Whipped Body Creme. Rich in vitamins A & E, our legs and feet were getting geared up for the responsibilities of a working woman and stay-at-home mothers. Finally, our toes got glamorized with some fun paint to top it off. Overall, I think that we had a pretty good "GNO" and are looking forward to the next one! Thank you Stein Eriksen Lodge!

Exclusive RED Door Spa Party

A toast to the Red Door Spa at Phoenix Biltmore for winning Salt of the Earth's retail contest! Red Door and Salt of the Earth combined forces and put on a fabulous party for their clients on August 23, 2011. The party turned out to be a success complete with red & white wine, chicken kabobs, mini cupcakes, free mini spa services, and custom blended Salt of the Earth products.

Paul Heslop (Chief Care Officer for Salt of the Earth) and his wife Laura flew in from Salt of the Earth headquarters near Salt Lake City and brought the innovative Blend Bar for custom blending Whipped Body Creme and Creamy Sugar Glow for the party goers. Red Door currently carries the Creme and Scrub in Thai Silk for their seasonal Silk Serenity Mani/Pedi services. It was a real treat for their clients to have a night to choose from over 20 scents and watch as their own products were created. It was a great evening and Salt of the Earth thanks Phoenix Biltmore Red Door for all of their hard work and new friendships!

Increasing Spa Profits

Here are some of the suggestions to help increase your spa's profits:
  • Menu - Engineering: Tweaking the spa menu in order to maximize profits by nudging the customer towards the most profitable services on the menu. One way to accomplish this by not pressuring the clients is to list the most profitable services first on the menu. They will subconsciously be drawn towards those services by thinking they are the most popular or the best. The first step in this concept is to know which treatments are the most profitable. ResortSuite is one of the available softwares that can crunch the numbers for you and assist in the management of the business side of the spa.
  • Know your Clientele: If your spa clientele is primarily travelers and vacationers, they go to the spa to find an escape. They look for treatments they can't get anywhere else; ones that are more elaborate and unique. Having a custom scent or product is a great way to make your spa one-of-a-kind. The client will be more incline to purchase retail products if they know that can't get it at there local spa. However, if the clients are mainly locals and repeat customers, they need monthly or weekly maintenance type services. Seasonal scents and services are also great for loyal clients; it creates a new experience with each visit. Simple adjustments to the spa menu according to the clientele type, can greatly increase profits
  • Simplify: When there are too many options, people start to shut down. Offer a reasonable amount of services that cater towards your clients. "Often, the path to profitability is not based on quantity, but quality." - "Your Path to Profitablilty"

Men at the Spa

Las Vegas SPA BUZZ

EVENT March 28th: Salt of the Earth traveled to the beautiful ARIA hotel and casino in Las Vegas for a Spa Buzz event. We met with some fabulous spa directors and regional leaders within the spa industry. Salt of the Earth's mission is to create experiences, so of course our signature Blend Bar was present. We wanted to "mix it up" from the everyday body care lines these professionals are used to seeing. With our Blend Bar, we literally hand-mixed customized body goods for the Spa Buzz attendees. From our selection of over 50 scents, each person was able to choose for their mood!

Our innovative BLEND BAR mix station allows us to make a specialized product right in front of the customer!
